🛠️ Class 4th Science
Chapter 2: Work and Simple Machines
📖 1. Detailed Introduction
In our daily life, we do many activities like studying, lifting bags, or pushing a toy. But did you know that Science defines "Work" differently? Let's understand what Work and Simple Machines are! 💡
🏋️ What is Work?
In science, Work is done only when you apply force on an object and the object moves over some distance. If you push a wall heavily, you feel tired, but since the wall does not move, Science says "No Work is Done"! 🛑
Formula to remember: Work = Force × Distance 📏
🧰 What are Simple Machines?
Simple machines are basic tools that make our work easier, faster, and require less effort. They do not run on electricity or petrol; they use our manual force. There are 6 types of simple machines:
- 🏋️♂️ Lever: A rigid bar that turns around a fixed point (Fulcrum). Example: See-saw, Scissors ✂️.
- 🧗♂️ Inclined Plane: A sloping surface used to lift heavy loads. Example: Ramp, Slide 🛝.
- 🎡 Pulley: A wheel with a rope used to lift objects. Example: Drawing water from a well 🪣.
- 🚗 Wheel and Axle: A wheel connected to a rigid rod. Example: Steering wheel, Doorknob 🚪.
- 🪓 Wedge: A tool with at least one slanting side ending in a sharp edge. Example: Knife, Axe.
- 🔩 Screw: An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder to hold things together.
💡 2. Solved Examples (10)
🧱 Example 1: Pushing a huge rock but it does not budge (move).
Answer: No Work Done (because distance moved is zero).
Answer: No Work Done (because distance moved is zero).
🎒 Example 2: Picking up a school bag from the floor and keeping it on the desk.
Answer: Work Done (force is applied and bag moves upward).
Answer: Work Done (force is applied and bag moves upward).
🛝 Example 3: Sliding a heavy box up a ramp into a truck.
Answer: Simple Machine - Inclined Plane (makes lifting easier).
Answer: Simple Machine - Inclined Plane (makes lifting easier).
🪓 Example 4: Cutting an apple using a steel knife.
Answer: Simple Machine - Wedge (sharp edge splits the apple).
Answer: Simple Machine - Wedge (sharp edge splits the apple).
✂️ Example 5: Cutting a sheet of paper with scissors.
Answer: Simple Machine - Lever (turns around the center pin/fulcrum).
Answer: Simple Machine - Lever (turns around the center pin/fulcrum).
🪵 Example 6: Fixing two wooden planks together using a metallic screw.
Answer: Simple Machine - Screw (holds objects tightly).
Answer: Simple Machine - Screw (holds objects tightly).
🚪 Example 7: Turning a round doorknob to open the classroom door.
Answer: Simple Machine - Wheel and Axle.
Answer: Simple Machine - Wheel and Axle.
🪁 Example 8: Reading a book sitting silently on a chair for 1 hour.
Answer: No Work Done (in scientific terms, because there is no movement).
Answer: No Work Done (in scientific terms, because there is no movement).
🪟 Example 9: Pulling the strings to raise a window blind/curtain.
Answer: Simple Machine - Pulley (changes direction of force).
Answer: Simple Machine - Pulley (changes direction of force).
🛒 Example 10: Pushing a shopping cart down the supermarket aisle.
Answer: Work Done (cart moves forward with applied force).
Answer: Work Done (cart moves forward with applied force).
📝 3. Practice Exercise (15 Questions)
Identify the type of Simple Machine or state if Work is Done / Not Done:
- 🪓 An axe head used by a woodcutter to chop tree logs.
- 🧱 Holding a heavy suitcase in your hand while standing still at a bus stop.
- 🛹 A ramp built outside a hospital entrance for wheelchairs.
- 🔩 The swirling grooves/threads found on the neck of a plastic water bottle.
- 🚩 The mechanism at the top of a flagpole used to hoist the national flag.
- 🧳 A boy kicking a small stone along a pavement.
- 🛞 The steering wheel used by a driver to turn a school bus.
- 🪵 Pushing hard against a heavy banyan tree trunk.
- 🔩 A bottle opener used to pop open a cold-drink cap.
- 🧬 A crane lifting steel bars at a metro construction site.
- 🥒 A vegetable peeler used to peel potatoes.
- 🪜 A ladder leaning against a high house wall.
- 🪵 Driving a nail into a wooden board using a hammer.
- 🛒 Rolling a toy car across a smooth tile floor.
- 🪵 A see-saw in a children's playground.
