Chapter 3: Measurements Basics

1. Detailed Introduction

In our daily life, we often need to find out how long an object is, how heavy a bag is, or how much milk is inside a bottle. Finding the exact size, quantity, or amount of something is called Measurement. Long ago, people used body parts like handspan, cubit, or footsteps to measure things, but they were not accurate because body sizes differ from person to person. Today, we use Standard Units.

The Four Key Types of Measurements

  • 1. Measurement of Length (Durat / Lambai): Used to find how long or short something is. We use a ruler or measuring tape. The standard unit is Meter (m). Small lengths are measured in Centimeters (cm) and long distances in Kilometers (km).
  • 2. Measurement of Mass / Weight (Vajan): Used to check how heavy or light an object is. We use a common balance or electronic weighing machine. The standard unit is Kilogram (kg). Small weights are measured in Grams (g).
  • 3. Measurement of Capacity / Volume (Matra): Used to measure the quantity of liquids that a container can hold. We use measuring cylinders or flasks. The standard unit is Litre (L). Small quantities are measured in Millilitres (mL).
  • 4. Measurement of Time & Temperature: Time tells us how long an activity lasts using a clock (Standard unit: **Second**). Temperature tells us how hot or cold an object is using a thermometer.

Quick Unit Conversion Reference

• 1 Meter (m) = 100 Centimeters (cm)

• 1 Kilogram (kg) = 1000 Grams (g)

• 1 Litre (L) = 1000 Millilitres (mL)
